There are numbers of students on our Fda course that already finished ABC Diploma in Graphic Communication last year. They have reason to compare FDA and ABC diploma and think about advantages and disadvantages of both. I am one of those students. I have something to compare this year to.

I started preparing to FDA from the first day of my summer vacation. I was nervous about it because I hadn't been that experienced as other students that applied to that course. ABC diploma was my firs ever experience in arts subject and I felt like blind, deft idiot who should understand stuff she never even heard about. However, the first day on FDA relaxed me and made me feel a little bit better. Darren's phrase ' You are here to study and you shouldn't be a professionals, so, don't worry about your mistakes' made me go to the shop, buy loads of books on typography, Graphic Design and Illustration and try to multiply the university's studying process with my own self education process. I was surprised when we've been told that we will have Personal and Professional Development lessons that will explain to us how to find work, promote ourselves and make a portfolio. My biggest worries were about my lack of professional knowledge so PPD were kind of light in the end of the tunnel.

Creating our own blog was the first step in our ' professional development' plan. Some people were really disappointed about it because we had to just show our project process and that might be boring for public. Everyone wanted to have minute of fame and popularity. My first few weeks of blogging were just about checking statistics, showing some of my works and writing about exhibitions I've been at and something that inspired me in the Internet. I've been photographing every inspiring thing I could see, recording lessons and their outcomes. I realised then, that having a blog, makes me think deeper and look widely to see more things than I usually did.

I wanted to make my blog interesting not only for Fda student, but also for other people surfing in Internet. I tried to show some specialities of my country, like in 'Culture shock 4 U' and 'Some bad views of my city' posts. Also, tried to inform people about something new and interesting in Arts world like in posts about my journey to Frieze Art Fare or Skin Exhibition. It helped me. I learnt new artists, found new great techniques and websites with great inspirational and informational data which not everyone knows. I wanted to share and I got a good number of views of my blog. I also had a great story related to it. I wrote a post about Dan Attoe and when I woke up next morning, I found more that 100 views of my blog. The reason of that was Dan Attoe's message on Twitter with link to my blog post in it. I was surprised by that. I never expected that someone like him can find my blog site and share it with everyone else.

Blog is very useful in terms of study as well. Studens can absolutely freely share all research information with each other, share our drafts and see what people finally done. Period of the biggest information sharing was during our Final Major Project time. I am not talking for every student, but I honestly tried to share my best research pieces with other people. We had a little bit lack of guidance with our book, so I tried to find book prototypes in the Internet, to show people how it should look like. I found Luca Rosean's online publication of the 'London Through the eyes of a designer' book. People liked it and I felt good for helping them.

I honestly think that blogging helped with self development. I watched so much great projects, techniques and usage of different materials that decided to develop my knowledge further. I started doing tutorials to improve my software skills, started photographing staff I never photographed and so on.I feel much more comfortable after this year and have clear plans for summer, like to do the projects on my own, develop my CV and portfolio and check different agencies in Spain, to know their scheme of work.

Summarising my first year of blogging, I can see, that the most popular posts were about FMP book prototype, post about Dan Attoe and history of Myriad Typeface. People mostly came from Blackboard, Facebook and Twitter. Most popural month were November 2010, when I had more than 350 views.

My plans for the future development are redesigning of my blog. I want to make an introduction image, work on typographical side of my blog and layout. Of course, blog is not a proper portfolio stuff. However it may become popular like ' Blog of Francesco Mugnai'. And the only possible option to earn that is to work hard, watch, hear and collect all interesting information.

- With the advent of technology, such as Twitter, blogs and the Internet, has the reality of being a final year graphic design student changed? There’s no denying it has become infinitely harder to stand out of the crowd as creative directors can see hundreds, if not thousands, of student portfolios with a few clicks of the mouse. And, because of this, graphic design students have to be a mixture of designer, PR agent, blogger/tweeter and technophile.
  But does the industry perception of graduates take this into account? This book aims to show the reality of being a final year graphic design student by comparing a day in the life of seven Ravensbourne students, in an unbiased and clear manner. This book does not include data from the industry as you, the reader, have an infinitely clearer picture of what a day in your life is like and therefore can make the comparisons yourself. Instead, all it does is portray the reality and lives of seven graphic design students on 13/04/2010 in the hope of painting a more accurate picture and the notion that the microcosm reflects the macrocosm as a whole.
  The book is comprised of a day in the life of 7 students shown through the use of 7 sections, 7 colours and 7 typefaces and comes shrink wrapped in black metallic foil. Thus must be torn to read the book and represents night transitioning into (revealing) day.

"People’s personal experiences can reveal more about a place or space than the single-sided perspectives presented by the media. In Experiencing London personal statements were collected through questionnaires and were then mapped according to location."

This is an adjusted version for a display at London Bridge station.
All the comments were collected by asking people to fill in their personal experiences and opinions on a card featured below. Each card had a different heading to provoke responses.
I tried various techniques to find an appropriate means of displaying the information gathered. One technique included spray painting the comments on an AtoZ at the exact locations.

"3 Minutes is the second publication from non-profit organisation Designers Against Human Rights Abuse (DAHRA) and the second collaboration between DAHRA and Tibet Relief Fund.

The premise of the book is to show the full extent of the Tibetan conflict through 10 diverse and extremely powerful 3-minute interviews, each describing the 3 minutes that changed their lives. This idea is reflected in the covers of each booklet, which separately make beautiful abstract covers but together form to make a ‘3’.

Contributors were asked to translate these minute interviews into 16 printed page booklets using primarily typography. The result is a book made up of 10 beautifully designed booklets from some of the world's best designers showcasing considered and stunning typography."

'Crime Time' by Igor Duibanov ( Russian Criminal Tattoo)

Tattoo with Compass Rose is the classic element of the criminal identification. It came from soviet prison traditions and symbolyzes the freedom (free like a wind). Compass Roses at the both sides of clavicle is the main sign of all criminal bosses and criminal kings. Compass Rose at laps means that the owner doesn't obey to the law, goverment, police.

LHVS - is the popular criminal abbreviation and the motto of thugs.
Legavim - Hui, Voram - Svoboda (Fuck cops, freedom for thugs).

Religion is very important moment of criminals in prison, it's mainly Ortodox Christianity.

Periodic Table of Typefaces

This table made by Cam Wilde. I found it on Behance, however now it is quite popular in the internet. The Table of Typefaces groups by families and classes of typefaces: sans-serif, serif, script, black letter, glyphic, display, grotesque, realist, didone, garalde, geometric, humanist, slab-serif and mixed. Each cell of the table lists the typeface and a one or two character "symbol" (made up by me simply based on logic), the designer, year designed and a ranking of 1 through 100.

Starbucks New Identity

On it's 40th Anniversary Starbucks introduced new identity.

I am actually not a big fan of it. Maybe it is just missing of old beloved logo and sign, and I need time to like it.

"There are no surprises with the new identity — actually, I take that back, I like the introduction of the surprising new bright green on the cup holder, it adds a nice touch of vibrancy — and everything falls in place with the idea of evolution. Nothing is a vast departure from the current materials people encounter at Starbucks, but it certainly feels new and re-energized. I like the extreme cropping and off-center application of the logo in the different products and merchandise, it makes the logo less “precious” and more something you can have fun with. Not sure about the wobbly star pattern on the side of the shopping bag, seems too random in contrast to the rest of the very controlled look, but certainly a minor complaint on the overall improvement that this new identity brings."

Know your type: Myriad

Flat. Generic. Invisible. Myriad is the ninth installment in our ‘Know your type’ series

In the early nineties, when typeface designers Robert Slimbach and Carol Twombly set out to design a new sans-serif for Adobe, the goal was to create something generic—jokingly calling the typeface ‘Generica’ during its design. “We wanted to make almost a totally invisible type of letter, just very generic… something that really didn’t show anyone’s personality too much,” explains Slimbach in Adobe Magazine.

The two designers worked simultaneously on opposite ends of the typeface, swapping designs, and smoothing out each other’s strong characteristics. “We were always saying to each other, ‘Oh, let’s not do this or that weird thing.’ So we would always fall back on the more obvious optical shape of the face.” As a result, the duo ended up with a typeface that could stand on its own, without reflecting the style of either designer.

The outcome of the face was almost inevitable, with the rules and standards that we set for it: perfectly straight stems, flat endings, and the flat character shapes with a certain amount of proportion to the letters. It’s very uniform—just a real practical kind of face. It doesn’t break much new ground from a design standpoint, but its strength is that it’s very flexible for sans-serif typography. You can create many different voices, particularly in the width, that really change the character of the face quite a bit.

Of course, the typeface has often been compared to humanist typeface Frutiger, designed by Adrian Frutiger almost twenty years prior.

Myriad Myriads

Released as part of the Adobe Originals series in 1992, Myriad became the flagship typeface for Adobe’s Multiple Master font format. Although the format has since been superseded by OpenType, it was unique and groundbreaking in that it gave users the flexibility to generate custom font variations based on design variables (or ‘axis’) like weight, width, optical size, and style.

Myriad MM included 15 masters (shown in black). Interpolation allowed users to create any combination of width and weight (Source: Adobe).

Myriad MM (MM referring to Multiple Master) included 15 primary masters, ranging from Light Condensed to Black SemiExtended. With a weight axis ranging from 1 to 830 and a width axis ranging from 1 to 700, the technology could interpolate any combination imaginable—essentially giving the user access to myriad Myriads.
Modern variants of the typeface have since been released, including Myriad Pro (the OpenType version released in 2000) and Myriad Web (which is optimized for on-screen use).
Oddball versions Tilt and Sketch were released in 1993 as part of Adobe’s “Wild Type” collection.

The Volkswagen bug of typefaces

Soon after its initial release, Myriad found its way into the debut issue of Wired magazine, where it was used heavily for years. Eugene Mosier, production art director at the time praised the typeface for its “proletarian feel,” appropriately dubbing Myriad the “Volkswagen bug of typefaces.”
Its non-offensive, humanist properties have attracted numerous companies like Wells Fargo, Walmart, and even Adobe to use Myriad for corporate branding (Adobe has since moved to its own Adobe Clean typeface, keeping Myriad for its logo).

Myriad has a warmth and readability that result from the humanistic treatment of letter proportions and design detail. Myriad Pro's clean open shapes, precise letterﬁt, and extensive kerning pairs make this uniﬁed family…comfortable to read, while the wide variety of weights and widths in the family provide a generous creative palette for even the most demanding display typography.

Myriad Apple is a customized version of the typeface, seen here as Steve Job unveils the iPhone.

Perhaps most famously, Myriad was adopted by Apple as their corporate typeface in 2002. ‘Apple Myriad’ replaced its former Apple Garamond, which had been in use since 1984. Apple’s proprietary version is a customization of the popular font with minor spacing and weight differences.
The Myriad typeface has become a recognizable part of the Apple brand over the past few years. The typeface can now be seen on everything from iPads to Steve Job’s latest keynote—and inevitably on whatever shiny gadget the world is waiting for.
Last year, when Steve Jobs wrote his infamous open letter criticizing Adobe and declaring war on Adobe Flash, he titled it in Adobe’s own typeface.

The new Helvetica

With the release of Adobe Illustrator version 10 a decade ago, Myriad became the application’s default font (an honor previously held by Helvetica). In turn, it became the default font for a generation of design dabblers and print shops—to whom the font dialog will remain a mystery.

The typeface has shipped with its Creative Suite software ever since. Perhaps as a result, Myriad remains popular today, and can be spotted everywhere.
In August 2010, Adobe made Myriad Web (along with many other fonts in its collection) available as an embeddable webfont through Typekit.

New task for VCT. Create a time line of anything, connected to Graphic Design. I decided to take Guiness Posters. Everybody started blaming me, that it is already exist and so on. But I want to make a timeline that will show how fashion , history or different trends changed Guinness' prints. Love them, by the way. I think their ad companies are even better than Coca Cola's. I am so in love with their sense of humour, but I never drunk Guinnes:) shame on me.

ICA with February depression

So, I had a rest from my blog for a while. My February depression took a lot of time and I feel exhausted because of it. No changes, everything is pretty stable and boring.
I am working on my new brief from ICA. Institute of Contemporary art is a very 'community' place in the middle of London's 'tourist' zone. I have to crate 20 PDF pages showing my research and 5 different case studies, that shows Graphic Design role in audience participation. Second part of the project is creation of 10 PDF pages with my solutions for increasing audience participation within ICA. I have few ideas, however after few lectures about ICA I understood that it should be something quite cheap but communicative. Working on it.
So, guys, if you have spare time, go to ICA, they are showing interesting and provocative films in their cinema, also they will have LCC zine collection exhibition soon.

We are working on Ditto Press project for almost 3 weeks and actually did a great amount of work. Some people got stuck, some people still don't really know what to do with the brief. I am not sure that I am doing everything right, but I am very excited about the project and about the experimentations we are doing on lessons. I will divide them for few posts, because of the big mount of images.

So, holidays are gone, and we have a new brief. Ditto press is a print/publishing company based in London. Our final product should be a test prints to show off the capabilities of riso printer in an innovative and interesting way. Range of issues:
The way the ink sits on different papers
Legibility with different fonts
Overlapping different colours
Different photographic rasterisation effects
Gradient effects
Anything else we can think of

We had our first lesson after briefing at Tuesday. The task was to generate a pattern from the different images we've been given.And, of course, put it on our blog. So, I've been just playing around the images, traced it in Illustrator and that is what I have.

Still a bit confused. Have loads of ideas, however it is really difficult to put them together - make them great for print machine and so on.

"Born and raised in Toba, Japan. Yoskay moved to the United States at the age of 15. Born in Osaka in 1977, Azuma earned a BA in Fine Art from Kyoto University of Art & Design and was represented by Hiromi Yoshii Gallery in Tokyo, where he last held a solo exhibition in January of this year. Azuma was known for richly detailed paintings and drawings in which outlined forms such as the figures of young girls were filled with dense, psychedelic imagery including skeletons, geometric patterns and imaginary landscapes. Representative of the Yoshii gallery's aesthetic favoring colorful, figurative works with a subcultural bent, Azuma was included in the group show of young Japanese artists "After the Reality," curated by Yoshii for New York's Deitch Projects in 2006. Other major group exhibitions in which the artist participated include Fukutake House at the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial in 2006 and "Portrait Session" at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art in 2007.

Attoe was born in Bremerton, Washington in 1975 and moved through Idaho, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa before choosing his current location near Portland, Oregon. Attoe attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he first studied psychology, and later art. He earned his first and final Bachelor degree credits at UW-Marathon County before earning his Masters at Iowa City University.
Attoe's work often touches on the grittier parts of both rural and urban life colored with a mystical form of existentialism."

Soviet Phantom in our life

Some of the old houses in Almaty still have some "Soviet Voice" on them. This house was build in 1953

20 years ago, the most posh and respectful thing was a car garage.
Only governmental workers and rich people had it. Now, they are standing without any owner

We just build a 20 floor skyscrapers in the middle of the old ugly yards

One week before my homecoming, my father went to the Deer Hunting. They spent 3 days on horses in mountains, and finally brought some deer meat :) 2 days ago, we invited our friend for the evening of 'home food'. My mother and me made a whole big slice of baked meat. So , I made some shots to show you. Still cannot forget some people last year, who asked " Does Russia and Soviet Union countries have any food? We thought you have only bread and water". Watch:

Dentsu Kansai of Osaka, Japan created an identity for
Rohto Pharmaceutical’sEpisteme line of luxury skincare products.

I find this work very aesthetic, however it is a little bit not clear what is what. The only thing I can say for sure is that overall view is very beautiful!

Nook, Bronze

R/GA in New York came up with the name and designed the identity for Nook,
Barnes & Noble’s first e-reader.

AOL, Bronze

New York’s Wolff Olins created a memorable rebrand for AOL,
distancing the brand from its former American Online days.

House of Cards, Gold

Leo Burnett along with Pentagram in the UK designed the identity for House of Cards,
a campaign for UK’s housing and homeless charity Shelter.

This is good. Cards symbols always has a magic effect on me. And also I really like comparison between homeless and cards. Interpret it as you like!

It took me a little bit long to collect interesting typefaces in London. Some people had an idea of "typeface series" like 'night type', 'sign type' and so on. So, I found my own inspiration. I've been collecting typefaces with help of the most important and most popular places in our life: PUBS. English Pubs' typefaces are very traditional. Gold colour, black layout, funny names. I love them. Even if I know the I never use them in my life.

However after few days I felt bored about pubs' typefaces. They are almost the same. So, I've started collecting other London types.

Uniqueness of history of Lizy Fittipaldi consists that the woman has ceased to see in 1993, and for the first time took in hands a brush two years later – in 1995. Being the diplomaed bookkeeper and a financial analyst, Liza together with sight has lost work, independence and meaning of the life. Its long depression lasted more year while once the husband hasn't brought to it a children's water colour set. To general surprise, Liza took in hands a brush and has started to draw.

It couldn't study techniques of painting, observing of actions of the teacher, couldn't see a picture. But it hasn't stopped the woman, and in exchange she has thought up own system of training: listened to audio versions of books about art and visited together with the husband the well-known museums for which she never found time in the previous life. To be guided in a composition of the future picture, Liza pulled on a canvas of a grid from ropes, but in due course has learned to manage and without them.
